Hotel tax debate continues

There is a move afoot in the city and within the city’s Budget Committee to attempt to give more of the city’s hotel/motel tax revenues to entities other than the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce.

The tax has helped Ashland attract tourists and new business. Originally, 67 percent of the tax went to the city’s general fund for use on streets, sewers and services to the public. Organizations like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce receive funding from the final 33 percent of the pie, as well as other organizations in the community.
