ASHLAND, Ore. – A cougar in a tree in a busy part of downtown Ashland left police and wildlife officials with a decision to make Saturday morning.
The 76-pound cougar had climbed about 20 feet up a tree near Ashland and Clay streets, a busy part of downtown not far from homes and businesses.
State wildlife officials joined city and state police at the scene around 8:45 a.m. The area was cordoned off and several homes were evacuated.
State police said the cougar’s presence in broad daylight put the public at risk. The cougar was shot and killed around 10:40 a.m.
